Are You Drinking Enough Water?According to a survey carried out by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) earlier this year, around 89% of the population if Britain is not drinking sufficient water to maintain healthy hydration levels, and are therefore walking around at least partially dehydrated most of the time.

The survey revealed that approximately 20% of men drink absolutely no water at all and the same goes for around 13% of women. While only around 7% of people aged 25-34 do not drink water during the day, this figure rises dramatically in the more mature individuals; 25% of individuals over 55 years of age stated that they do not drink water during the day.

Water makes up around 60% of an adult’s body and 75% of an infant’s body weight. This balance must be maintained for good health because water performs vital roles in the body such as regulating our core body temperature and transporting nutrients and oxygen throughout the body.

The human brain is about 85% water and when you do not drink sufficient water it can affect your concentration, ability to perform mathematical calculations and cause headaches. Drinking more water regularly can also make us feel more alert, make our skin look healthy and plump, and give us more energy.

Are you one of the 17% of the 2,000 British adults interviewed during the survey who said they do not drink water at all during the day, or maybe part of the 8% who said that they drink approximately 1.5 litres of water throughout a normal day?

While we can get around 20% of our daily liquid requirements from water-rich fruit and veg as well as other liquids such as juices and teas, the majority must come from drinking pure water. Many individuals cited their reason for not drinking more water as the fact that tap water smells or tastes funny and like chemicals.
