The human body is made up of around 70% water; every cell in the body needs water to grow and to function optimally. When this balance drops the body cannot function optimally and we become dehydrated, which leads to a dry mouth, dry mucous systems, headaches, fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, decreased sweating and urination, chills, flushed skin, rapid heart rate, and increased respiration and core body temperature, constipation, nausea and more.
Water is required for the body to flush away toxins and to get nutrients to your cells via the bloodstream. When your body gets dehydrated, your blood will thicken and make it difficult for your heart to pump it through your veins, resulting in heart-strain and a lack of nutrients in your cells.
While we can last for weeks, even months without food, the human body will shut down slowly after just three days without drinking water. Within a few hours, the mucous membranes will begin to dry out, resulting in a dry mouth; the person will get a headache and start to feel dizzy. Within three days delusion, nausea and constipation sets in; this will be followed by muscle spasms, painful urination, vomiting, neuromuscular seizures, dim vision, temporary blindness, and then a coma and eventual death if hydration does not occur soon.
Hydration is vital to the overall health of your body because if the correct balance between water and electrolytes is not maintained, none of the body’s systems will be able to work efficiently. It is necessary to replace fluid lost from sweating, urination and other bodily functions on a regular basis as the body is not able to store water.
We can replace some of our lost fluids by eating water-rich foods such as watermelon, oranges, lettuce, grapes, celery, radishes, strawberries, spinach, reduced-fat dairy products, such as yoghurt and cottage cheese, skinless chicken and turkey breast, fish, shellfish, lean beef and tofu. Soups also consist mainly of water and will add to your daily water intake.
One of the best things you can do for your overall health is to invest in a water cooler so that you can be assured that you and your loved ones will always have access to chilled, toxin-free, fresh, nice-tasting water virtually non-stop basis.
