Most individuals take drinking water for granted, but keeping hydrated is vital to our good health and the optimal functioning of our bodies. Unfortunately there are millions of individuals who do not drink sufficient water every day and end up at least partially dehydrated.

The amount of water in the human body differs by age and gender – babies are 75 to 80% water; adult’s bodies are around 70% water, and as we age this percentage of bodily fluid drops to around 50 – 60% for women and 60 – 65% for men.

The water in your body can be found in every single cell, and is distributed around the body in constant percentages:

  • Our blood is 90% water;
  • The human brain is 85% water;
  • The human skin, the largest organ in the human body, is 64% water;
  • The kidneys contain around 79% water
  • Your heart consists of 73% water; and
  • Your muscles are 79% water;

While there is no universally agreed upon quantity of water that should be consumed daily, it is important that we all drink sufficient water throughout the day to ensure that we are constantly well-hydrated. This means drinking more water in warmer weather, when exercising or doing physical work, and when ill.

All cells and organs in the human body need water to function properly; the joints also need water to lubricate them and the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues require water to protect them. Water is also necessary to chew and digest your food and assist the passage of food through the intestines as well as to regulate core body temperature.

You can get some of your daily liquid requirement via foods with high water content such as soups, leeks, pears, tomatoes, watermelon, and oranges, as well as from other liquids such as juices and tea. Coffee and alcohol are both diuretics therefore make one urinate more.

The majority of your daily fluid requirement should come from drinking water though, and the best method of ensuring that you are drinking pure, non-toxic water is to invest in a water cooler that can provide you with chilled, great-tasting drinking water 24/7.
